Incognito
So, what exactly is Incognito?
Sometimes referred to as iBraces, self-ligating
Incognito braces are a specially made orthodontic appliance that attached
to the back of teeth, making them virtually invisible. Usually made
from gold alloy, the braces are extremely strong and use special archwires
to move the teeth, which eliminates the need for the bulky metal and
wires associated with traditional orthodontics.
What does the procedure involve?
Incognito braces need to be specially
designed and manufactured to suit the individual, therefore a number
of certain steps need to be taken in order to produce and fit the Incognito
system. A usual process will involve the following steps:
- An Initial Meeting - your
dentist or orthodontic specialist will assess your teeth, and any orthodontic
concerns. All the options available to you will be discussed and, if
Incognito braces are the way to go, then impressions of your teeth and
jaw will be made from putty. These impressions are sent off to a laboratory
so the braces can be made.
- Design - Once the mould
of your teeth arrive at the lab, the Incognito braces are designed to
fit your individual needs.
- Manufacturing - The designs
are then used to help craft the custom braces. The use of special CAD/CAM
technology manufactures the braces from gold alloy.
- Fitting - Once the braces
are sent back to your dentist/orthodontist, they will be fitted into
place and treatment can begin.
- Assessment - As the special
archwires pull your teeth together check-ups may be required for any
adjustments.
How long does treatment take?
Usually, treatment using the Incognito
system will take around the same time as traditional braces. An average
complete treatment time will take anywhere between fifteen and twenty-eight
months.
What are the advantages of Incognito
braces over the alternatives?
There are numerous advantages connected
with Incognito braces, especially when compared to traditional orthodontic
treatments. A few of the key advantages are highlighted as follows:
- They are discreet - because
they sit on the back of the teeth, nobody will be able to tell you are
wearing them.
- Individualised - 100% custom
made, Incognito braces are made specifically to suit you and your needs.
- Quick treatment with less
hassle - less check-ups are needed and visible results can be seen within
weeks.
- Comfort - no damage to the
outer tooth surface and minimal discomfort and interference to daily
activities. The gold alloy also eliminates issues concerning nickel
allergies.
- Suitable for all ages -
Incognito can be worn by people ranging from thirteen years old to the
over sixties.
Are there any downsides?
Incognito, although quicker and more
discreet, does come with a few potential downsides that should be highlighted.
They are:
- Extra Brushing - because
Incognito is non-removable, extra daily brushing may be needed to avoid
tooth decay.
- Adjustment time - you will
need to allow yourself to get used to the braces, so that initial speech
difficulties and any pain can disappear.
- Finding an Incognito practice
- not all dentists provide Incognito, so you will need t search availability
in your area.
How much will Incognito braces cost?
As with all treatment, the prices vary
from practice to practice. Also the level of treatment required will
change costs. However, usual costs of Incognito braces are a third of
the price of traditional braces and alternatives. It’s always advised
that estimates are collected and assessed before agreeing to any treatment.
